MY KONMARI STORY

1/9/2018

In January 2015, I was feeling uninspired.  I was complacent in my job as a footwear designer and was considering a change, what that change was, I didn't know.

The craze at the time was Marie Kondo's book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up." The fundamental principle of the book is to surround yourself with objects that spark joy, everything else should be discarded.  I devoured the book and got right down to purging.

I won't go into great detail about the method, but you start by putting all of your clothes in a large pile.  You then touch each piece and ask yourself, does this bring me joy? If the answer is no, you put in your donation bin, without hesitation. After your clothes, you move to books, then papers (documents, bills, etc.),

then miscellaneous items, and finally sentimental items.  After completing the Konmari process, I felt rejuvenated!

I was so pleased with our home that I decided to do the same at work.  My co-workers at the time probably thought I was crazy.  I was throwing out pens, pencils, even paper clips that didn't make me happy!

And just as it would happen in a movie, I placed my pen in its holder, leaned back in my chair to signify the completion of my Konmari overhaul, and then, I was called into my boss' office...

"I'm sorry Natasha, we're restructuring, and your position has been eliminated."

Kondo lays out a warning in her book. She says the process can lead to breakups, sickness, and significant life changes.  I Konmaried myself out of a job that no longer brought me joy and subconsciously forced myself into reconsidering my career.

A potential overstatement, but I owe where I am today to my initial Konmari purge.  I love what I do now and am far from complacent.

As I mentioned in my previous post, January is the month of organization.  I will be purging once again, starting with the bedrooms.  This time, I won't be following the exact Konmari method, but I will adhere  to the core principle. I hope you'll join me!
